Browning Bros., Winchester Rep. Arms Co.

I have a 1902 Military Colt auto. Colt records show shipped to Browning Bros., Winchester Rep. Arms Co., New Haven Aug. 4, 1913. Was this a retail outlet or something to do with John Browning, the inventor? Does it do anything for the value of the gun? It is about 50% mirror polish charcoal blue, original mag, exc bore.

    Its a Colt that got shipped to Winchester with brownings name on it, it can only help the value! How much it effects it would be a guess.

    The Colt's record says shipped to Winchester but this pistol is not one with Browning marked on it.

    John Browning's association with the Winchester Repeating Arms Company ended in 1901. Only the guns that were shipped directly to the Browning's Odgen or Salt Lake City location were marked (stamped). Based on the apparent fact that Colt did not ship the gun to Winchester until August of 1913, I sincerely doubt that there is any connection to John Browning (other than the fact that he was the person who invented it).

    My source of info is Goddard's book The Government Models. It has pages of serial numbers of Colt large frame autos from the 1900 thru the basic 1911, approx 10% of total production. That ten percent is pieces that were sent to important personages, addresses, etc. After further exam I find it says when two names are given as 'shipped to', the first is the actual addressee for delivery to the second.

    There are dozens of delivery to Browning Bros., here and there a few followed by Winchester Rep. Arms. in August 1913 nine pistols are listed where my s/n appears.

    John Browning had two brothers. Matthew Browning was basically the astute business man, John the inventive genius.

    The Browning's must have had a Connecticut address. Doesn't seem likely shipping pistols to Utah for Winchester, New Haven destination. Why so many to Winchester is a question. This is all the result of my skim of the book - a detailed study might disclose more and/or better info.
