Marlin 336 RC 330-30 1953

Recently, a Marlin 336 30-30 Manufactured in 1953 was given to me by a relative. The gun is in great shape and shoots very well. The only problem is that it is not set up for a scope, only iron sights. My question is if anyone knows if I would drive the value of this old rifle down significantly if I have it drilled and tapped for a scope mount?

    Drilling and tapping an older rifle for scope bases will always reduce the collector resale value. But then I don't know what the collector interest in 1950s Marlins amounts to.

    Let's see....it's been kept original for over 50 years. It would be a shame to alter it now. I would suggest using it "as-is" and scoping another rifle. I feel that if you drill and tap it for a scope base you will regret it someday. Probably will only hurt the value about $50-$75 now, but maybe much more later.You received a very nice gift from a thoughtful relative. Congratulations on your good fortune.

    Can you put peep sights on it without D & T? A nice globe up front and an older Redfield peep mounted on the rear makes for a very accurate combination.

    Some Marlin rifles can be scoped by using existing screws in the receiver. I have a Marlin lever I scoped using this process. I would try the Marlin forums for imformation on your rifle if you do not get what you need here

    leave the gun alone.you will ruin it tapping the receiver.the early 336 guns are called "waffle tops" by collectors . the lines stamped on top of the receiver are there to reduce glare .don't alter it in any way a light cleaning and a little gun oil will do

    YES AGREE !!! Do not alter it .. Those do not carry the value the older Winchester 94's do but they do a collector value.. I got $450 for one of those in the shop not long ago.. keep it as it is !!
