Rem.270 ..need barrel work.

I have a remington model 700,270 cal. that is not as accurate as i would like it.would like to have a new stock on it and barrel work done to it,to make it more accurate....does anyone know who does this kind of work..

    First question...what kind of accuracy are you getting with it now, and how good do you want it?

    Next one....which model 700 is it? Does it have bottom metal(floor plate or detatchable box magazine well)?

    Next...what are you using for a scope?

    Lastly...fast cars go faster with more and more money...the more money...the faster the care...same goes for accuracy...the more mone the better the accuracy....what is your budget?

    Myself and several others(who are much better than I) on here do such projects for ourselves and friends...we could give you some pointers on things to look for and do.

    at 100 yards 3 1/2 inch groups,would like MOA at 100 yards.it is a model 700 LS,around 17 years old.has no metal floor plate,or box magazine.you have to work the bolt to unload it.scope is tasco world class plus 3x10x50.tried other scopes still shoots the same.would like to use the same barrel thats on it if i could..

    Take it out of the stock, and relieve the barrel channel only. There will be a pressure point that is raised up about 2 inches back from the forend tip...get rid of it, using sand paper and the appropriate sized dowell. Then relieve the barrel channel to the action lug to free float the barrel...a business card should slide from the forend tip to the action lug...unobstructed. Using an INCH-POUND torque wrench, torque the action lug and tang bolts to 50 INCH-POUNDS...starting on the rear tang. Have someone who knows what they are doing adjust your trigger to 3 pounds, with a minimal, but safe sear engagement, and just enough overtravel to release the sear. Lastly, but MOST IMPORTANT as the rest make sure the scope bases are solid, and locktited. Actually put on a set of Burris Signature bases and rings , and fasten to them at minimum a Nikon Buckmaster, Burris Fullfield II, or Sightron SII scope...the way your rifle is set up, along with that damn Tasco is not conductive of accuracy. I feel fully confidant that I can make that rifle into a sub MOA rifle without changing any parts, but adding some bedding. You actually spoke of a new stock...one with pillars in, and made for a blind magazine would be a great start since your rifle does not have any bottom metal to join, the pillars should be an easy install in your stock, for someone who knows how, or has done it before.

    Did the rifle ever shoot with better accuracy?

    If yes, when did it stop shooting accurately?

    Are you the original owner?

    Do you know how many shots have been fired in the 17 years, approximately?

    Factory or reloaded ammunition?

    Did you put the scope on and take it off to test the accuracy?

    Have you looked at the muzzle under magnification?

    What kind of set up are you using to test the accuracy?


    There are probably 100 different areas in a rifle that can affect accuracy. This is a small start to attempt to find a reason before spending money uselessly.

    You may have to take it to a gunsmith for better scrutiny.

    Some .270's prefer certain bullet styles and bullet weights...Before you swap scopes and spend on the rifle..try a variety of ammo... JMHO...

    nothing but great advice in the above posts but let me throw in this, clean it. my personal choice is saturate a patch with shooters choice on a jag. push it from the breech end only to the muzzle, take the patch off and repeat do this twice. next use a dry patch the same way, twice. next saturate a brass brush push it through the barrel from the breech, saturate it when it comes out the muzzle and give the barrel at least ten strokes before removing it. let the gun sit with the shooters choice in the barrel for ten minutes before repeating the process. after a couple of cycles use only a dry patch through the barrel a couple of times and follow up with a lightly saturated patch with a good gun oil. i guarantee you won't believe the crud that comes out during the cleaning. sometimes i supplement krol oil instead of shooters choice for the second brushing.
