Colt Detective Special

I have two Colt Detective specials that I have acquired over the last two years. My main problem is how do i know what issue it is? I have one nickel and one blue. both have the full lug so that rules out the first issue. Is there any tell tale signs I should look for. Thanks in advance for any help.

    I'm considering making a purchase on a Colt Detective Special and was curious if the price was decent. The firearm was made in the mid-seventies according to the owner, but I do not have the serial number. It is a 2" chrome plated model at about 95% finish and has wood Colt grips. The only finish wear is on the tip of the muzzle and the trigger guard. The gentleman who owns it is a retired officer and claims this was carried for a short period. I assume as a back-up piece. Included in the sale is the original box as well as all documentation from the Colt factory, as well as the shipping container it was delivered in. The asking price is $400.00.

    with wood grips, then i would say jump on it.., BUT, first find out if the price is negotiable, like offer $350.00.

    Take a look at the asking and actual selling prices on the auction side. I have an early Detective Special, and would not part with it for the world. That is a superb price...don't let it slip away!!!!!

    The finish is probably nickel rather than chrome; assuming original Colt finish; should say on the box. Assuming original finish and with the box and papers $400 is a good price.

    It is nickel. I've been listening to the current owner talk.....I know better.

    If it was made before 1973 it should look like this, except for the finish, note the un-shrouded ejector rod.

    After 1973 they were made with shrouded ejector rods, like this.

    I am trying to find out where I can get the screw on knob on the end of the ejector rod and also a set of original wood grips in good shape. It is a pre 1973 model. I have tried Midway and some other place but havent found anything yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    do you have gun shows in your area ? around here we have a gun show once a month and some dealers have tons of stocks for every handgun ever made, screws, springs you name it they got it.

    WOW !! that revolver with the wooden grips had to be carried by someone who sweats a lot, look at the pits....., or am i just seeing things ?
