Bert H. Winchester question?

Do you know how many 1886 Winchester SRC's were manufactured? You don't see many of them and i was wondering why!

    To the best of my knowledge, there were 6,223 of them made.

    Bert: According to Madis, a total of 159337 Model 86's were produced. Of that figure, 1 of each 200 guns was a carbine. That means 796 guns were carbines. That's a big difference from 6000 plus.

    Should I totally disregard Madis and his numbers. Can you recco a better reference book. Thanks.

    This is just another case were Madis was completely full of Horse Manure[xx(].

    In reality, there were a few more than 159337 Model 1886s made. A friend of mine owns serial number 159996, and I know of several other guns that are in the 1599xx serial number range.

    As for the number of Carbines made, my numbers came from the detailed Model 1886 survey conducted by CFM research volunteer John Hawk. John worked closely with John Madl (who wrote a superb reference book about the Model 1886).

    So, and in answer to your next to last question, I can only tell you that I personally do not use any of Madis's serial number versus DOM information, nor do I trust any of his so called "rarity" tables... I have proved way too many of them to be pure hogwash.

    As for a better reference book, it all depends upon which Model you are interested in. There are lots of good reference books out there, and there are a few that are truly superb. Just to give you an idea of what is ahead of you, my personal reference library contains 130+ published documents (reference books and catalogs).
