What is the difference between a Police Special and a Police Positive Special. It's a Colt .38 circa 1960.

  I had one of the early Police Positive Specials years ago. The difference was the cartridge they were chambered for. The Police Positive Special is chambered for the .38 Special cartridge. Whereas the Police Positive was chambered for the .38 Smith & Wesson cartridge, Colt called their version of this cartridge the .38 New Police as they didn't want to put S & W name on their guns.
  
  I believe if you have Colt that's marked Police Positive Special it would be older the 60's. The one I had dated to the 20's.

  There is no such thing as a Colt (or S&W) "Police Special".
  Colt made the Police Positive Special for many years. There was also an earlier Police Positive with shorter cylinder for cartridges like .32 Colt and .38 New Police (same as .38 S&W.) They made other "police" guns like the New Police and Official Police. But never a "Police Special".
