What became of the remington concept of sleeving a bullet in a sabot and allowing a smaller caliber lighter round to be fired at high velocity from a larger caliber bore.?

    Hello, and welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.

    That Idea goes back to the patches round ball. The patch actually had a compression hold on the round ball, transferring the spin of the rifling to the ball.

    As suggested in the prievious bost, the results of that were mediocre at best, as most 1 in twist rates in 30 caliber rifles are a little faster than the 55 grain 22 caliber bullet prefers.

    The principal has came full revolution however, back to the muzzle loaders in which it was originated, only this time the patch being used is a plastic sabot, with a conical shaped bullet.

    There was also some argument among law enforcement that these types of rounds would make it very difficult if not impossible to tie a shooter to a crime through ballistic comparison. I think the manufacturers saw the writing on the wall and just stopped producing them voluntarily.

    Limited experience, but I had a box of 30-06/.22 Accelerators that I fired in a proved pre-64 M. 70.
    Velocity was right up there with my Swift;
    Accuracy was, as I recall, in the 3 to 4 inch range for 3 and 5 shot groups off the bench at 100 yards. With straight '06 factory or reloads that rifle was good for consistent 3/4 to 1 1/4".

    No offense, but when you have frangible .22 caliber bullets being fired at well over 3200 fps, like the ones that Remington loaded in their accelerator cartridges. There is very little remaining of the jacket that a CSI tec can use to get any sort of rifling profile for comparison. Not much left of the ruptured bullet jacket apon close range impact. It's not like a .45 slug in that respect.

    I've tried the 22 bullet in a .30 sabot a couple of times with very limited success. The concept allows you to shoot a light, fast bullet w/o much recoil. Long range accuracy is not suitable for varmints but would allow hits on coyote size critters at 100 or so yards. This would improve chances of taking out a predator w/o worry of a pass through and or ricochetas would happen with full bore ammo. I really think this was the original idea behind this product hence the chambering for 30-30 and 30/06 the basic standby of farmers and ranchers 30 years ago. I loaded some sabots with Remington .224 55 grain bullets and got under 2" groups but only after several shots had fouled the bore. This accuracy after cleaning until refouled. Most shooters tried a box and got dismal results which might have improved with the shooting of another box or two.
