Just got concealed permit

Gave my daughter (a senior in college) my beautiful old SW 36. So, now I need a carry for myself. Saw a beautiful, used, stainless Ruger SP101 for $399 (in 357). Any thoughts on this. I only want a revolver.

    The best defensive handgun is effective enough to help you in case of dire need; operationally reliable and intuitive to fire, even under extreme duress; small enough and/or light enough and comfortable enough to actually be on you when you might need it; and concealable enough if you must conceal, for the circumstances of clothing, weather, etc.

    I have carried for over 40 years on an almost daily basis. I have never needed a gun to solve any serious social problems (yet), but hopefully I'll have one available in that unfortunate circumstance.

    I personally carry a Colt Commander .45 with tritium night sights and laser grips, in either of two different holsters, depending on what I'm wearing, etc. And when I can't conceal the .45, I carry a Colt Mustang .380 for best hiding. The flat slabsides conceal well; the calibers are effective enough in the .45, and I hope so with the .380. I use premium ammo that has proven to feed 100%.

    I practice as often as I can. I have taken a self-defense handgun course twice in the last couple years too, and though I thought I had a good handle on things after all these years, picked up some very good points from a professional instructor.

    Your choice will be personal, based on all sorts of considerations like those above, and also including economics.

    Thanks for your insight on the concealed aspect of carry. Your points made me think of the difference in size of the SW 36 and the Ruger 101. Definately a difference.

    It should work fine.

    Just realize it will be a bit heavier than your model 36.

    If you like, you're good to go.

    There is also the option of the S&W Model 60, which is currently produced in 357 Magnum. It can be had in various configurations, and it is a bit pricier than the SP101.

    You can't go wrong with a S&W model 642 or 638!
