Pistol permit
Do you know what states or a web site that will tell me what states require a pistol permit and witch ones don't and witch state pistols are banned I think there are only two states were pistols are banned

I'm looking at purchasing a Beretta 92FS, but I have one question before I buy. I'm active duty military, currently residing in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area. However on paper, my legal residence is still upstate New York. Am I required to obtain a New York State pistol permit before I purchase this? Any assistance is appreciated. 0 -
I am in Ohio and just got my CCW permit. It is accepted in 26 states that have reciprocity with Oh. The Attorney Generals office in your state should have that info for you.

there are no STATES where pistols are banned--yet. There are CITIES in several states where owning a handgun is either highly restricted or banned such as your NYC, Chicago, Morton Grove(although as of July '08 Morton Grove removed their ban), Washington DC, and I am sure there are a few more. 0 -

Permit to OWN a gun, or permit to CARRY one concealed?
As mentioned, no State absolutely restricts mere ownership of handguns (yet), though several of them heavily restrict them and make it difficult to legally obtain them requiring individual paperwork, licensing, etc (eg MA, NJ, HI, etc).
Most states don't require any permit just to OWN a gun, though some do.
In terms of concealed carry, getting a permit (or license) to carry concealed easy in certain states, difficult in others, and impossible in a few.0 -
Every state has different firearms laws for ownership & carry. Even though a person may have a license or permit to carry in their "home state" when a person crosses into another state they are subject to that state and it's laws or legal opinions. All it takes is a difference of opinion from the other state's prosecuting attorney even though your out of state license or permit is current in your home state, realistically it is only valid for the state that it's issued. In some states the sheriff's office over steps their bounds and charges people knowing well that the state's prosecution will back them simply because it's political and it's believed that they're a constitutional officer of the law. 0 -
Handguns are not "banned" in NYC.. If you have a permit issued by the city you can certainly have them.. Anyone who has a permit issued from outside the 5 boroughs can NOT take a licensed pistol into NYC limits.. 0 -

The problem is that in practice such permits are virtually impossible to obtain.
Yes, if you are politically connected or a celebrity, you *might* be able to get one, but for the average schmoe. . .what do they say in NYC. . .fuhgeddaboudit.

Thats not true it has to be unload and locked in a box in the trunk seprate of the ammo.No unnessary stops can be made.If that was true you could never take one off Long Island except a boat.
In NY State you need a permit to just own a pistol and a carry permit is like gold.It is a felony to have a unregistered pistol in NY.There are maney different pistol permits there.0
