Home made bullet lube
Was wondering if anyone has a recipe for a home made bullet lube that does not use Alox in the recipe?

Beeswax and olive oil/crisco are great for black powder and probably ok for things in the .38 special range but aren't terribly agressive lubes. The beeswax is mainly the carrier, it's what you put in that provides the lubricating properties. Sure beeswax does some lubing but not a lot.
The Felix lube I mentioned uses beeswax, anhydrous lanolin, castor oil, ivory soap, and probably 1 or 2 other things I'm not remembering. It is good for up to about 2500 fps.
Though ultimately, bullet fit to the throat and bore has a lot more to do with leading and accuracy than what lube you use.
Ah heck here's the recipe:
Felix Lube formula
2 Tablespoons mineral oil
1 Tablespoon castor oil
1 Tablespoon Ivory, or homemade soap (grated)
1 Tablespoon Lanolin
Beeswax - Piece approximately 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" X 1 "
Heat mineral (baby) oil until it starts to smoke.
Add castor oil, and stir continuously for 1/2 hour.
Sliver the soap, and stir into the mixture a little at a time, until melted.
Add the beeswax before the lanolin, and then when that is melted, reduce or remove the heat and add the lanolin, thus not running any risk of burning or scorching the lanolin.
1 teaspoon of carnuba wax can be added to give a shiny bore. This can be found on the seal of Makers Mark whiskey, or the red wax on cheese from the supermarket.
Once made, let cool. This can be remelted in a microwave, and poured into the lubrisizer.0 -
I used beeswax and crisco, 50/50, but if I had it to do over I would add more beeswax and less crisco. That's just me.

The popular SPG lube is a combination of bees wax and olive oil. It can be mixed in porportions that suit all different temps. 0 -
Good luck finding lanolin.
What I use: Patch lube for muzzleloading = 1 part beeswax, 3 parts tallow.
BP Cartridge lube = 2 parts beeswax, 1.5 parts paraffin, 4.5 parts tallow. Smokeless lube = 3 parts beeswax, 2 parts white lithium grease. All parts are by weight. Take appropriate safety/fire precautions when melting and mixing this stuff.0 -
One home made lube I have heard about uses beeswax and STP motor treatment. Has anyone else heard of this or tried it? 0 -
Dean Grenell in his books (one I have is ABC's of Reloading) always talked about his mix of 50/50 beeswax and Vasiline petroleum jelly. 0 -

Me thinks you are re-inventing the wheel, after all the lube is the least expensive part of shooting cast bullets. The mess incurred in mixing lube hardly makes home remidies worth while.
BUT - - try this:
1) one wax toilet seal (beeswax seal avalible in any building supply & most hardware) also a great source of flux material for casting.
2) one 5 oz. tube of T/C Maxi Lube (sold where you get your black powder shooting supplies)
3) 1 tablespoon (about 1 ounce) of dry powdered graphite (sold for lock lube)
If a softer mixture is desired, mix in mineral oil (sold in the drug store for laxitive) one tablespoon at a time 'till you find what works in your temperature zone.

Like all hobbies, casting and shooting bullets can become a same all, same all type of thing. I have alrways found more enjoyment when trying something new. Yes, I agree there are alot of good lubes out there and I have tried many of them. I just wanted to try to make my own for the joy of doing so. I will also agree that it might be messy and not always cost efficent. Don't get stuck in the same old, same old routine are before long you may find the pleasure of your hobby may become less and less enjoyable. Give something new a try. Thanks to everyone for the recipes for I will give them a try and see how they work. Most loads will be for rifle use under 2000 fps. THANKS AGAIN! EVERYONE. 0
