savage 99?

lokking for info on a pair of savage 99's
1) 250-3000 cal ser#633615,schnabel fore end,checkered stock and forearm,rotary internal magazine,"round counter" on left side,

2) .300 savage cal,ser# 606731,schnabel fore end,checkered stock and fore stock,"round counter" on left side

both rifles are in approx. 80% cond.

any info or links for info especially their value and model(ie:eg,r,c,ect.) would be appreciated

    Worth more if not drilled and tapped.

    250-3000 might bring $600 if condition is nice, the other $450-500 seems to be typical in the West.

    From the sound of them and with no pics, it would appear to be a pair of Savage 99-EG's from the mid to late 1950's. Any Savage '99 over SN 575000 approximately will be drilled and tapped on top of the receiver for scope mounts, and from those SN's they likely will be. You can check on the auction side for prices but the 250 will be about double the 300 for price. I'd guess about $800 for a 250 and $400 for a 300, but again, that's without seeing any pics of the guns.

    You can determine exact year of manufacture by looking at a small round stamp located on the lever boss - leading edge where the lever attaches to the receiver. I believe "A" means 1949, "B" is 1950, etc. The 300 is fairly common, I think the $450.00 ballpark is about right for an 80% 99.

    Based strictly from observations in my neck of the woods, the gap between condition equivalent Model 99's chambered in 250 Savage and 300 Savage is shrinking. I attribute this to more folks wanting to actually hunt with a Model 99 and the relative ease of finding a rifle chambered in 300 Savage. While the prices of the Model 99 in 250 Savage remains relatively stable, the 300 Savage is bringing higher prices. The 300 Savage is as good a choice for deer hunting as most any other cartidge on the market, albeit the ammo is expensive. One of my hunting buddies grandson killed his first two deer this year with his great granddad's ole model 99 in 250 Savage.
