David Chicoine who works on them says the guns after the 1907-1909 changes are ok for smokeless. That gets you a DA Fifth Model, Safety Hammerless Fifth Model, or any Perfected Model.

An old time collector once warned me that the DA .38s were not mechanically sturdy. A friend has one with an irreplaceable part, the cylinder stop, broken. Irreplaceable because they are delicate and all spares have been used up. The hammerless guns seem to last better. Rex Applegate (author of Kill or be Killed) liked them.

I've got one with a good cylinder stop. I need a hammer if your friend is planning on parting out.
