I wanna reload... cont. (part 2)

Thanks for everyone's help on part 1. If any of you read this, FYI last night I bought the ABC's of reloading, 8th edition and downloaded about a million e-books and 20 videos which I'll be reading / watching starting tonight. So now to part 2... I found a guy in town that is selling some reloading stuff and want to know if these prices are "fair"?

Lyman Turret....................$70
Hornady Powder Thrower....$40
Hornady Scale..................$25
Trickler / Funnel...............$10
RCBS Caliper....................$15
22/250 Carb(?)dies...........$20 (forgot brand, black cardboard box)
9mm Carb.dies.................$30 (Lee)
45acp Carb.dies...............$30 (RCBS)

Lube 1-1/2 cans................$5 (hornady)
"Titegroup" Powder...........$10
800 CCI Lrg Rifle Primers....$25

So the total comes to $370

Besides the other dies I'll need... As far as equipment/tools go, the only other things I'll need is a primer tool and a case trimmer, right?

    I would say the prices for individual items are fair but if buying the whole lot I would expect to get it all for $300.00.

    Problem is, it's not his whole lot. I picked and chose out of what he had for sale. As we started going through the prices, he knocked off between $5-$10 for each item because he usually lists on ebay and me buying it would save him the seller fees

    Tell him to keep his steel .357 dies, carbide is worth the money.
    Lee brand is ok and less expensive than RCBS.

    The .22-250 dies are NOT carbide and will require case lube to resize. Lyman used to use black die boxes before they made everything possible orange.

    Just my two cents worth, I think the prices on the individual dies are a bit high, one can almost buy the same thing new from Midway for those prices. That's a great buy on the Titegroup powder if it's an unopened can, if it's open then it depends on how much is left. A new can is usually around $22 where I shop.

    He can't sell the primers or powder on E-Bay nor is he going to sell the brass or ammo on E-Bay and if he sells it on GunBroker the shipping (primers are considered Hazardous Material and must be shipped by a HazMat certified shipper) will be really expensive. Yet, his price is a bit more than what I have been paying for primers at my local gun shop. But I don't know the going rate for primers in your area.

    Other stuff seems okay, more retail then what I would expect and if he knocked money off already like you say then it was really too high to begin with.

    I agree that $300 would be a fair price for the entire lot,

    I just picked up a Lee Auto prime with a 9mm shell holder in place (press shell holders WILL NOT work in the auto prime)for $5 at a Local Gun Shop, I think I paid $15 for the other one new in the box. Probably have $15 in shell holders now also. Check Midway for the Lee tool and buy their box of shell holders for 11 bucks, it's cheaper that way than to buy individual ones.

    Just my two cents worth.

    I am going to qualify that statement for you a bit. Powder and/or "loose" primers HAVE to be shipped Hazmat. Loaded ammo or primed brass is NOT considered Hazmat but still has to be shipped common carrier not USPS.

    Hazmat shipping right now is $30 (or did it just go up to $35) on top of normal shipping fees.

    I would tell him to go ahead and list on e-bay, then get an RCBS Rochucker Supreme kit. You could not GIVE me a Lyman turret press.

    Green(RCBS) for single stage or Blue(Dillon) for progressive is the only way to go.

    I just chimed in and have not read your first thread. I might suggest you post this over on the reloading forum here on GB also.

    When I do load, I load for high end accuracy...therefor no turret or progressive press will satisfy my needs. RCBS and Redding are the high achievers in presses that are single stage....except for ones that I have seen built by some individuals.

    tsr1965 and FEENIX, I have never had any experience with a lyman turret press, but I guarantee you that other than the 50 BMG, no other commercial cartridge will distort, destroy, or do any harm to the redding Turret Press. They are built like a tank, and they will last equally as long as ANY RCBS press. I'm not saying RCBS's aren't good, because they are. I have owned a Rockchucker before, and it was an extremely good press, but in no way better than the Redding, and not nearly as fast because of the turret.

    I've been through a couple of Mix-and-Match reloading outfits. Yeah, everything is supposed to interchange, but not everything works together without some minor problems.

    I got rid of everything & bought a Dillon turret outfit, & I haven't looked back. A few dollars saved when you buy your outfit won't be remembered in a year or two. If a Dillon part breaks, or wears, or just doesn't look right, you phone them & they ship you a new part. They don't even care if you bought the press new or used. And, they will walk you through any problem you run into.

    figure out how much time and gas it will cost to go round up all this stuff.true he cant sell the powder/primers on the bay but. he will get them sold. the price is fair but he may go 350. some of the scruggsters here on gb are penny pinchers and some are living in the 60s

    I was kinda worried about mix and match too. And he said he has no idea if there is anything wrong with any of it because he took it all in on a trade with the intention of just selling it on ebay, Just that everything looked to be in good working condition.

    Thanks for all the help guys, from what I've gathered it appears brand name is mostly personal preference derived from personal experience, mostly good no matter the brand, but like almost any product one in a "batch" may have been bad. While one guy swears by his another says it's junk. Also, I should try to stick with one brand, whichever it may be. I think I'll stick with my original plan of buying a complete "kit" whether it be new or used.

    If that was his intentions of passing it off to someone unsuspecting on e-bay, then that shows what type of stand up fella he is...I would stay away from it.

    I don't believe I am living in the 60's but have been dealing with firearms and reloading for more than 30 of my 44 years. I know what things are and are not. When you come into your senses you will too.
