This maybe a silly question..........

I've got a few .22 semi-autos with internal hammers. I hate to dry fire guns, but I also hate to leave the hammers cocked after the last shot. Does anyone have an answer to this dilemma?

    Get some snap caps? usually come in a package with 5-10 of 'em, cheap.

    Since ammo is cheap, and there will usually be an abundance of empty 22's laying around, stuff a clean empty in the chamber, and drop the hammer. The snap cap is the next most expensive option.

    repeated dry firing may be detrimental (that's arguable) but once right before you're storing your gun away again ain't gonna cause much damage if any.

    I thought about snap caps or an empty casing, but was a little concerned about causing corrosion. I suppose that if I coated either with some action greas or CLP that this would take care of it?

    The 22 snap caps I've seen are all plastic

    I usually just drop the firing pin onto a spent shell, since as mentioned after shooting there are usually plenty of them around for free.

    Sure you could put a drop of gun oil on there to prevent corrosion (or swab the chamber with it), though in practice I never do, and have never had a problem.

    .22 snap caps are cheap, but unlike the centerfire ones, they are made of soft plastic and get chewed up from repeated use. The only advantage to these is that they don't look like live ammo in your chamber if you "press check" the gun.

    I also USED to use the .22 snap caps for this reason, but after chewing up a bunch of them, I just started using spent .22 shells instead since they cost nothing and are easy to find.

    A-Zoom makes aluminum snap caps. Before buying them I used spent .22s. If you wanna spend the cash on real snap caps go for it but after using them I'll just keep a handful of spent .22 casings.
