Old Remington Double Shotgun, Info Wanted

A friend has an old Remington side by side double he got from his dad's estate.

Marked on the rib is "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NY"

Serial number is 22063. There is a '16' and a '191' stamped next to the serial number.

Also stamped are the patent dates 'Aug ?, 18?1' and 'Apr 10, 1872'.

    According to the serial number you give the gun is a Remington Model 1889 and was made in 1892. The other numbers are factory inspection numbers. These guns were made with both damascus and fluid steel barrels. Look on the bottom of the barrrls for a single digit number like 1 or 2. This will tell which type of barrels th gun has Remington made high quality double barrel shotguns as would be expected. However value will depend on the guns condition, the amount of original finish left on the metal and wool as well as the mechanical condition.

    As you can see from the photos, this piece was not well cared for. The barrels look like a pair of sewer pipes. Along with this, my friend got a Winchester Model 37 [unk year of manufacture] and a Remington 870 Wingmaster [manufactured in 1953] , both in 16 gauge, and a Winchester Model 1897 [manufactured in 1917] in 12 gauge, plus a Universal M1 carbine [manufactured in 1966 from a commercial receiver and GI parts]. All show signs of neglect, although the Models 37 and 870 and the carbine are not too bad. He was at a loss as to cleaning them up, so I spent the weekend doing it for him. Cleaning the Model 1897 was a bear, 92 years worth of crud!

    So, now that I've stopped running at the keyboard, which numbers designate which kind of barrel, and are the fluid barrels safe to shoot with modern shells?

    Unless the hammers were changed,you have the Remington-Whitmore Model of 1874.
    The 1889 has crescent shaped hammers that distinguish it.

    More info:

    E. Remington & Sons made four different models of conventional top-lever hammer doubles -- Model 1882, Model 1883, Model 1885 and Model 1887. The Models 1882 and 1883 still have vestigial percussion fences below the breechballs while the Models 1885 and 1887 do not. Remington Arms Co. made one hammer double the Model 1889.

    Remington Arms Co. only manufactured one model of hammer double barrel shotgun, the Model 1889. Their predessor E. Remington & Sons made a number of different hammer double models. The serial numbers on the Model 1889 appear to have started with 30000 and had reached over 100000 by 1900.

    Terrific, thanks. My friend says he has an old newspaper photo of his grandfather holding this piece while aboard a houseboat floating down the Mississippi. Now that's interesting!

    The shape of the hammers is a quick way to determine the model if you have illustrations.
    Here are the years made and the serial number ranges for each.

    I have pertty much the same shotgun but it only has one patent date of apr 10 1872 with a 15 and 98 above it the serial #21911 on the barrel to no # on the barrels but there is a P on both of them dont realy care what it is worth just would like to know what model and year it was made i picked it up at a auction for 70 dollars 6 years ago
