Winchester 1897 Riot shotgun
I have a riot shotgun, Winchester 1897, 20" barrel, solid frame condition appears all original. Serial number is in the military range for trench guns for WW1. Did the Army use riot guns in WW1? Looking for a price and any further information. The barrel is marked CYL.
Serial number is E 650908
Wood is marked HDQTS

If your '97 was used by the military, it would have the markings-flaming bomb- somewhere on the reciever. Law enforcement and prison guards used riot '97,s. 0 -
No indication that the firearm was ever U.S. Gov't property. It is, however, stamped as having once been police property.
If the SerNo is close to either the beginning (or the end) of the 'Trench-run', that would explain the discrepency due to overlap in sales. I'm not sure if non-trenches (or pure civilian shotguns) were manufactured during the contract run of trench guns, but yours was definately not used by the U.S. Gov't. Best, Joe0 -

Not true for the WW I vintage guns. Most of them were not originally marked. If they went back to the Springfield armoury for refurb, then they were usually hand stamped on the forward right side of the receiver.0 -
I agree with givette... it is a commerial Riot Gun that appears to have been owned by a Police Department. The serial number indicates that it was manufactured in the early part of the year 1917 (February/March timeframe). 0 -
Thank you for your replys? Any idea on what it is worth? 0 -

At least $800, possibly a bit more if you find a motivated buyer.0
