M700/M40????

I have a Remington Model 700 in .308/7.62 NATO that looks exactly like an original M40 and it is down to fine details. Barrel codes indicate May 1993 as a manufacture date with an eight didgit serial number. This was well before the current production runs of new M40's produced by Remington. I was told by the seller that it was police issue and I verified that it has a Shepard counter sniper scope installed. It shoots very well with nearly no recoil. I get asked questions every time I take it to the range that I can't answer as to it's history. I plan to call Remington directly on Monday to see if this rifle was even available as a civilian item in 93 and see what history they may know. I would like any info as to what it may indeed be.

    Not sure what you are calling an "original" M40? That came about in 1968.
    Might you possibly have reference to the Remington PSS?

    That's the same story I got from a fellow a few years back. I was looking around and saw what I thought was a new M40 offering (and the price was $599.00 so I REALLY noticed it) but was told by the seller that it was actually older, a version issued to a few PDs and then turned in. Looked just like the new issued "civilian" M40 from Remington.

    As far as original M40 I mean the first issue USMC version that had the oil finish walnut stock, 6 digit serial number range and I could list about 6 to 8 other characteristics but that gets old. I knew this was not a brand new rifle but it wasn't a 60's model either. Strange was the barrel date code that said 68 or 93 and that made my heart jump for a second until I looked at the serial number. Don't the PSS rifles have PSS or M700P on the action? I am happy with the gun and it shoots anything I throw in it for .308 ammo and does it very well. It is just something you do not see everyday and it would be neat to see what it's history might be. Even the new runs from Remington aren't real close replicas of the original and there are custom shops out there doing replicas, right down to spray painting of Redfield scopes to olive drab color. I was just hoping that someone out there might have more info on non-civilian issue guns that came before this whole sniper craze got started. Oh yeah I mean long range varmit hunting craze. I qualified with the M24 in both the AF and Army but it is a much different creature based on the same action.
