I have an Iver Johnson Arms & Cycle, 38 (S&W) 5 shot pistil! Double action. Serial # is (60269 or 66269) Last date I can read on it is Auguest 25th I believe it's 1896!!!

    this is a second model safety automatic hammer revolver. the second model was manufactured between 1896 and 1908 and is designed for black powder cartridge pressures only. DO NOT FIRE THIS REVOLVER WITH MODERN AMMO. the main serial number location for the second model is on the left side of the grip frame, under the grip panels. this is where any letter code prefix to the serial number will be found. 99% of all second models had this letter code prefix and that will tell us when it was made.

    LARGE FRAME AND SMALL FRAME VERSIONS USES HAMMER THE HAMMER ACTION: Double top post barrel latch, nickel finish standard, blue optional, hard rubber grip panels with Owls head at top. Hammer the Hammer action, two frame sizes, and three calibers. Standard barrel length: small frame 3 inches, large frame 3 ? inches; Calibers: small frame .22 rimfire 7 rounds cylinder capacity, .32 centerfire 5 rounds cylinder capacity, large frame .38 centerfire 5 rounds cylinder capacity; Weight: small frame with 3 inch barrel .22 rimfire 12 ounces, .32 centerfire 12 ? ounces, large frame with 3 ? inch barrel 17? ounces; Frame height: small frame 3 ? inches, large frame 3 7/8 inches; Frame length: small frame 4 3/26 inches, large frame 5 inches; Overall length: small frame with 3 inch barrel 6 3/8 inches, large frame with 3 ? inch barrel 7 3/8 inches. Only difference between the first and second model is the barrel latch. Main serial number location on left side of grip frame grips must be removed to see. The Second Model features a double top post barrel latch, flat leaf hammer spring and two cross pins in the lower frame.

    Yes, It has an empty S&W .38 shell.
    I found the serial # under the Grip.
    It is ( T 50298)

    this second model serial number T 50298 was made in 1908. it looks like the trigger guard is a replacement (if that is the location of the first serial number you gave).

    The location of the first number I gave is on the underside of the lock just above the bullet chamber! No way this could be a replacement piece considering it's part of the barrel.

    My grandmother had one of these and she called it a Owlhead pistol account of the owl on the grips. My father said they were a good throw away gun back in the 20's. You could buy one for $2 or $3 dollars on plenty of street corners. I remembered it buy didn't know it was a S&W. Thanks.
