Ross rifle value
I have an old 1905 Ross 303 that seems to have been "sporterized". There is no wood above the barrel and the nose of the forearm is shaped into a Schnabel tip. Was this a commercial version? It shoots ok with POF (click bang after a restrike), ammo but the barrel is ugly and I plan on loading some fresh ammo. If I decide to sell it what do any of you think It might bring? ( I know I'm asking a lot ). Thanks in advance.

I recently saw one as you described at a gun show in cheyenne. I thougt it was sporterized by someone a long time ago, but dont know for sure. they were asking $650. didnt sell, although I thought long and hard. 0 -
An un-messed with one will go for $500-$1000 in poor to good shape, with pristine ones (rare) going for more.
A sporter? $650 sounds high but depending on condition and the quality of the job, $250-$400 would be my wager.
The Ross has a bad rap as it CAN fail if the bolt is assembled improperly on SOME models; and it had some extraction/operating issues in the mud of WW1. However if you put it together right and keep it clean, it is a butter-smooth action so far as straight pulls go, and quite accurate.0 -
I read that about the bolts for the 1910's. I think the biggest drawback of the 05's is the bolt stop. It can break if the bolt is slammed back too hard as in freeing a tight case or exited shooting in life or death shooting.It has the "Large Chamber" which is opened up to keep it from jamming during war in the trenches and mud getting in there.Yeah, it's "messed with".But it goes bang and I can't wait to try some reloads in it. 0
