    Winchester factory records that I have indicate it was made in 1959.

    The Polishing Room Serialization Records show it as being serialized in early January 1957. Serial number 244038 was the last serial number stamped on a receiver December 31st, 1956.

    Polishing records only indicate when the gun was serial numbered and polished. They do not indicate when the gun was assembled and ready for sale. Serial numbered guns in many cases sat for years before assembly. 1959 was the year your gun was assembled and ready for shipment.

    In the legal sense, Yes, your Model 61 was officially a "firearm" per federal regulations in the year 1957. Pauline's information is a bonus, in that it contains the information for when it was completely assembled.
