anybody know about swords? (pics)
I have acquired a sword I know absolutely nothing about. Does anybody know or have seen anything like it? Where it was made, about what year, approximate value. Any information would be great. The only info I was "told" was that its a WWII bring-back. Thanks, Brett.

My half educated guesses: Indonesia / Malayesia areas. I have seen vaguely similar blades from that region. They've an extensive history of blade making and blade fighting arts throughout that region. Often times the blades are of completely dis-similar styles, in the same relatively area.
Whether for local use or trade to out of area con las touristas, etc., it is for real. Had seen blades from Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos that were produced locally, of an individual or village type manufacturing. All that I had familiarity with, were made the same, whether for local use, for trade use or sales out.
(I was more familiar with shorter blades of ~6-18". More of long knife rather than medium or long sword lengths.) I'd be interested in what you come up with, re. the origins.
Were the previous possessors of this item in the military, or travelors, or what???

It's a "Montagnard" sword, made by the hill people who live(d) along the boarder regions of Laos and South Viet Nam. I have one almost identical to it that I picked up over there. It is fully functional, although the aluminum "obi" is loose on mine - they were/are hand made and built to a pattern, with no two being identical. The 's' stamps have some mystical symbolic meaning which I no longer recall. Mine has two notches cut in the top of the blade near the ricasso into which either brass or gold pellets have been hammered. 0 -
Its Southeast Asian in design.
Multiple regions there have similar-looking swords. I'n not knowledgeable to expound more than that.
I will say that if the WWII bringback story is true, tracking down the exact maker and site of manufacture of a probably locally handmade sword 60 years later is likely to be impossible.
Getting a good story about the travel history of the person who brought it back might be your best bet.0
