Ballistic Comparison 7.62x39

We need to do some very unscientific testing to one of our products. We need to shoot it with a 7.62x39 round, but no one has a weapon so chambered. What the most common equivalents be? I'm thinking .30-30 and .30 carbine. Impact would be at 10 meters or so.

    30-30 should be close *if* you reload using a 125grn bullet, but you can always download 308 or 30-06, etc. Or buy a cheap SKS.

    As mentioned, .30-30 is the closest common round in terms of pure ballistics.

    I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to test, but for the best ballistic match, you'd have to use both a similar bullet weight and SHAPE. . .most .30-30 bullets have flat noses to prevent accidental ignition within lever-action rifle tubular magazines.

    Meanwhile most 7.62x39 rounds use fully jacketed pointed bullets.

    Also, for what its worth, guns chambered in 7.62x39 are pretty common. Any SKS rifle should work, any AK could work, there are relatively inexpensive Saiga rifles in the caliber, etc.

    As most 7.62x39 has pointed, full metal jacketed bullets, the flat, soft pointed 30-30 ammo results will not be a good approximation.
    Neither will the 30 Carbine with its' round point, lighter bullet and 400 fps slower bullet.
    A Saiga or AK bought used might be your cheapest way to get good test
    data.
