c&r
Is it hard to get a C&R permit?
Who do I contact?
What do I do?

I'm selling an old Martini (over 50 years old) with a new .222 Remington barrel. Prospective buyers are telling me it's a C&R. Is it? If you say "yes", please post an ATF reference.
Thanks0 -
No fingerprint card is needed for the C&R license. 0 -
Nope, just fill out the papers the ATF sent you. Send one to the ATF and one to the Sheriff or LEO in your area (depends on where you live). Of course send payment too. 0 -
Exactly as other two answers state. will most like take a number of weeks . One note they will send you one LIC. do not sign this one before making bunches of copies You need to sign each copy as you use it. NOT the master copy. 0 -
You only need a fingerprint card if you are applying for a personal ID number. You do not need that for a C&R. 0 -
As an aside, many of the on line gun parts suppliers - Midway, Grafs and Brownells for example - give a pretty good discount for FFL holders to include C & R. Send yours to them and you should save some money on your buys. 0 -
Numrich Gun Parts also gives a discount. The only problem I have with my C&R is that it makes is a lot easier to spend money on my favorite hobby. 0 -
How does one know if a old pistol is a curio or relic?
Also I have been told that a ATF rep. will check your guns
every so often, is that true?
Thanks,

Peddler- to be C&R- the individual firearm must be 50 years old- or older, OR be on the list published by the ATF (all colt Woodsman, Huntsman, etc without regard to age). If you know a Model BR 549 went out of production in 1941, and it is now 2009- it is C&R. Yes, ATF has the right to insepct your RECORDS -that is your bound book of aquisitions and dispositions- and your firearms acquired under your license. Max once a year, you CAN take your stuff to their office, I have never had an inspection, others that have have indicated it is not a big deal- so long as you are not buying and reselling a BUNCH of guns in a short time frame (C&R is NOT a license to "engage in the business" of selling guns) Most fun an old man can have for $30 without catching something! 0 -

It needs to be provably manufactured more than 50 years ago and in its original configuration. Yes, ATF can inspect your C&R log and firearms but they will give you prior notice and probably won't even bother unless they suspect you're operating as a dealer.
Note also that some states do NOT recognize C&R licenses for handgun purchases and they must go through an FFL dealer.0
