REMINGTON OR CONTENDER
I was just considering making a purchase of a single shot, pistol for deer hunting. I am just beginning this interest and would like some opinions on what to look for. The only two common makers I know of would be Remington & Thompson Contender.
As far as caliber goes, I typically hunt woth a 30.06. Does either of these manufacturers make one in this caliber. If not, maybe 30/30?? With a short barrel, my guess would be that I would probably limit my shots to under 200 yards. That said, with the new Hornady Leverevolution ammo, the 30/30 seems likely. Oh, by the way, I have seen the Remington chambered in 7mm. That is a good posibility.
Anyway, any advise will be taken under consideration.

If you want to include rimfire, then the TC Contender. But you'll be limited to (in general) lower pressure centerfire rounds. If you don't care about rimfire, TC Encore. And yes, you can get a 30-06 barrel for one. 0 -

Does Remington still make the XP100 - I'm assuming that's the one you're referring to - and will it handle the 30.06? I have a custom shop XP in 223, it's more accurate than my T/Cs.
Personally I'd go with the T/C Encore, the Contender is not strong enough for the 30.06. Although it's offered, I don't think the 30.06 works all that well in the 15" Encore barrel. I think you can do just as well with the 308 or any number of shorter more efficient calibers.
If you're sold on the Contender then a 35 Remington, 375 JDJ or 45/70 will work well for you.

Sheeesh, no brainer, get the Thompson Center. Barrel changes take less time than a minute. It can be either a pistol, carbine, shotgun or rifle. Currently there are over 200 barrels listed on the Auction side for the Contender or G2. If you want big power go for the Encore, better yet get one of each. I have a TCR & have bought several barrels from G.B. It is a more sophisticated looking rifle than the Encore. Sadly it it no longer produced[V], just my opinion,[:p][:p][:p][:D] Eddie 0 -
I am not sure if Remington has resumed production of the XP-100 or not. However, you may be able to find one on the auction side here.
I have a Thompson Center Encore, which is a larger framed gun then the Contender. I have mine in 308 Winchester, though they do make it in 30-06. don't expect to go out and be able to shoot this combination well enough to hit what you need to, that will kill a deer at 200 yards, unless you have had lots of practice. That is lots of practice with VERY hard recoiling handguns with scopes on. Its not quite as simple as getting the gun, and slapping a scope on it, and going out ans whacking them down like they do on the hunting shows. With my 308, I can hit clay pigeons hanging on a nail at 200 yards off a good rest.

The XP-100's are hard to find in the single shot version, but will flat out outshoot a TC all day long.. I hunt with one chambered for the .284 Winchester and it's a hell of a deer getter.
Shot lots of them with a TC contender and a .375 JDJ also...
You can change the barrels on a XP too if they are set up the correct way...
The 30/06 in a Encore will get the job done with no problem, shoots great for such a short barrel..
Hunt up a old XP single shot and have it rebarreled to the caliber of your choice........0 -
Get an XP-100, re-chamber to 358 Winchester, use Hornady 180 gr. single shot pistol bullet, zero at 200 yds, and watch them fall when you do your part. No tracking will be necessary!
