    Mark 1 made 1867-79. Post 76 no longer 100% Belgian made/assembled.
    Mark 2 made 1979-1992
    Both use a detachable magazine.

Pre 76 has the edge in fit/finish over remaing MK1's and MK2's.

Thanks for the input, you've been very helpful. You'd be surprised how little I can find online on the BARs...

.........there isn't a mk1, the standard BAR (no mark)was made in Belgiam, Japan, and a mix of places, the mk-1 is the one with the 'hold open' device (much better imo). The japan made guns are just as good as any other.

Thanks for the input, I have learned a bit from both of you on the BAR Rifles.

But, if there is no Mk2 BAR, why does Browning have the BAR MK2 listed on it's website?? (in search box, enter BAR MK2).

There is a Browning Mark II Safari...very nice gun, made in Belgium and assembled in Portugal. I think this is the latest and greatest that came out from 93 to present...may be wrong on the dates.
