I have a Friend that needs a pistol...

Colt Super
a 9MM semi auto pistol for his Daughter who is going into law enforcement.

I know nothing about current 9MMs.

She would like a good used one for $300 - $350.

Would prefer a compact or sub-compact, in good shape.

Steer me, guys, please ??

    Doug.....A used Glock 19 or Sig P228. Might be able to find one of those in that price range. New versions would be more like $500 to $600 but these are hard to wear out quality guns.

    Find out what departments use in the area she wants to work and get one of those...

    out here, the LE all carry the baby glocks as BUGs and for "civilian" CC. the undersheriff really liked my PM9, but the dept wouldn't pay for it, so he got the glock. haven't heard any complaints at "the range" (back of my property), but I don't like the glocks for CC.

    Nowadays I believe off-duty guns have to be approved by some agencies/depts. Before going out and getting something that won't pass muster, pin this down before purchase. If she can carry anything in 9mm, no problem.

    IF she can find one, a German Police SIG P6 9mm would fill the bill nicely. They are/were the predecessor to the SIG P225. For a while they were imported and sold in the $250 range, but those were bought up as fast as they were available and ended up being bought and sold by profiteers for $450-500. They are sometimes available and, when found at the right price, are a FINE pistol.

    It is hard to beat a Glock 19. It is the standard of which all others are judged. The only one comparable would be the Springfield XD, which I see no one has mentioned...shame on them![:0][:D][:D][:D][:0]

    I strongly agree with Beantown on the S&W auto. Especially the 3913, or the 6906 Model's. The 3913 is a single stack, and the 6906 a double.

    Presumably this is for off-duty or backup use, since she'll be issued her own gun on joining the force (or be given a list of guns to choose from to purchase).

    Some depts restrict what officers can carry off duty, some don't. So before you go anywhere, find out what gun(s) she is PERMITTED to carry.

    Surplus West German Sig P6 is a nice gun, and there are still plenty to be had at $350, but its not particularly compact or light, won't reliably feed non-ball ammo, and is limited in capacity compared to more modern guns. Not the best choice given the constraints of this question, IMO. If you're going to be carrying a service-sized gun, you might as well get a double-stack that will run 100% with hollowpoints.

    I have to say its going to be hard to find a good double-stack modern subcompact 9mm for only $300-350. If you can stretch the budget to $450, you're basically wide open in terms of choices, I think.

    I'm not personally a big fan of Glocks for concealed carry, but you *might* find a used Glock 19 at the upper end of that price range, and that would be an excellent choice. Since most agencies issue Glocks, it certainly can't hurt to have a similar gun as a backup/off duty gun. Glock 26 is the subcompact version, and could work too. . .but you're unlikely to find one for under $350.

    Sig p228 is a good choice, but again, I sincerely doubt you'd be able to find one in that price range. (If you do, let ME know. . .because I'm buying it!).

    You can probably find a surplus Smith 9mm in that price range, though most of them are not compact or subcompact. Smith autos are often overlooked, but they're generally strong and reliable guns, with good extras in their price ranges such as stainless steel and strong Novak sights.

    Beretta 9000 is actually a pretty good compact pistol, that can be had in that price range used. Ditto for CZ-RAMI. There are others.

    If you want a true backup gun, the Kel-Tec PF9 is available in that price range, as is the (bulkier and less ergonomic) Kel-tec P11.

    FWIW, lots of cops in the Northeast still carry .38s as backup/off duty guns. IMO, these merit consideration.


    Edit: Rugers are good too, and are readily available in that price range, but they're full-sized guns, not compacts. Also, they're kind of ugly, and women sometimes care about such things. [;)]

    suggest a ruger p89, heavy, built like a brick, have one, never has failed to feed, fire, eject. magazines are easy to find and don't cost a bunch. paid $300 one year ago, @1k rounds fired.

    suggest a ruger p95, bought two this year, lighter than a p89, built like a brick, never has failed to feed, fire, eject. takes p89 magazines. paid $275 one year ago for each, @1k rounds fired in each pistol.

    holster might be an issue. frame had a grove for a light, holster for the p89 will not fit the p95.

    resale is not that good, just a damn good pistol.

    check summitgunbrokers.com or sdnn investments for s&w for a 5906 or 5903. have one of each, good as the ruger, p89 a little lighter, it's all about cost and what fits her hand.

    tryed to edit my post because it's cdnn investment not sdnn investments. the p89 is lighter than the 5906 and the 5903 is way lighter than the p89.
