looking for information on old gun

I have a mauser rifle I bought a while back not really knowing anything about it. I did know it had a replacement stock designed after a styer rifle. I took it apart today and found some markings on it, wondering if anyone knows what they mean.

zbrojovka brno, a.s. vz. 24

it has other markings telling what caliber and some things I don't understand (foreign language) The serial is PR 23509.
There is also some marking that has been partially filed off, it looks like at one time maybe was a flower or an animal head of some sort

Please if anyone knows about this weapon let me know. Thank you so much

    Hello rafterjg.

    My very limited knowledge is that you have a Czech BRNO VZ24 Mauser.
    I believe they were produced from 1924 to 1942. They are built very similar to the Gewehr 98. The ones that I came across years ago were solid, well made and most were in excellent condition.

    While responding to your note I pulled-up the Wiki. site, it covers my length and breadth of knowledge on the the vz24. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vz._24

    That should cover the basics, and I'm sure that you will get any additional info you need or want here on site. They have to have some Mauser nuts here!

    Interesting as per the scubbed possible flower mark.
    The Japanese Navy in WW-2 acquired some Czech VZ-24's. Reportedly all from the "P" series produced in 1937. (Serial number range P1-P99999).Chambered in 7.92MM.
    Not much is known about these. Several theories as to how the Japanese acquired them. Ranging from a siezed shippment to China, to purchased from the Germans. have no info as to if they were marked w/a MUM as per other Japanese battle rifles.

    Two things briefly:

    - Wiki anything to do with firearms and some of the ammunition articles can be highly suspect because of who is doing the editing. He tends to use unsubstantiated opinions rather than fact. He has done some good articles but read carefully and check other sources.

    - Your mention of certain marks on the rifle receiver can conjure different ideas for different people. It is important to keep us all on the same page so we can provide you with the best information possible. This often means taking some photographs which will need to be well lit, sharp closeups and overalls for configuration. The closeups help us use those marks to identify the time period, manufacturer and other information represented by the factory through those marks. Without them, we can only guess and sometimes we don't do so good at that... So help us out by getting some pictures and post them here.

    At the top of this forum is a 'Sticky' titled "Posting Photographs" which should help you along the path to getting the pictures up and running. It's simple but for the first time it can get confusing, post again or e-mail me.

    I thank everyone who tried to answer this question fo me. I have asked some people and done some research also. I had mentioned the "flower" looking mark and my grandpa mentioned the japanese mum. so I found a picture and it was not the same. so I kept searching. It turns out that the rifle I have was made for Iran the marking was not a flower but the pahalavi crown, lion and suncrest. this weapon was origionally chambered in 8mm how it became a .308, I have no Idea. Thanks again for the help guys
