winchester 70 sight question
I just acquired a 1951 vintage mod 70 in 270 win and the rear sight was removed to mount a scope. Are there different versions of the winchester 22G sight used on the model 70's? I have what appears to be 2 versions, the only difference being the rear height, one is much higher than the other, and they both have the same elevator

From 1936-1953 the 22G had a leaf that was .325" high. In 1954 it was replaced with the 22K which was .415 high. It had a longer point on the dovetail base but used the same elevators (there were 4 or 5 elevator variations). The 22K was standard on low comb stocks while the folding leaf was used on Monte Carlo (cheekpiece) stocks. The 22G and the 22K are interchangeable but might necessitate a change to the front sight as well. Sounds like the shorter sight is probably the correct one. Your rifle has a forged integral front sight ramp as well. In 1952 they started soldering them after older barrel inventory was gone. Great rifle in a great caliber. 0
