FFL fees

So my son bought a handgun out of state and had it ship back home and had to pay a FFl dealer for his service. What is the typical fee you should expect to pay for a dealer for handling and background check?
My son paid $45 for this service. I tend to think this is way out of line. Hell the dealer made more profit of this than he would of if he sold the gun himself.
I understand you need to pay for this but come on??

    I won't pay more than 25. Yes, they need to make money but most feel that is fair. I have a neighbor that was charged $50 by a friend. And there is even another neighbor down the road that will do it for $25, some friends.

    Depends on the state, whatthe market will bear. In CA a transfer fee for an out of state purchase can run anywhere from $75.00 to $150.00. I'd be thrilled as hell to pay only $45.00 - where are you, maybe other folks from the same area will advise.

    My FFl charges $35.00 for long guns, and $50.00 for handguns...if you do not buy them from him. he is happy to do an out of state transfer. So, I tend to think that $45.00 is decent enough. There is a LOT of redtape and BS to go thru with the BATFE and sometimes state or county agencies. There are some of those, who think it is peachy to buy somewhere else, and have it transferred without a cost by someone else other than the person who sold it. I say that as a previous FFL holding individual. That is just wrong.

    Not the cheapest, but no where near the highest priced. Most guys seem to have a favorite dealer who charges around $25, but many of them have been buying guns from that shop for years. Quite frankly someone who has never set foot inside a dealer's shop until the day he wanted to have a firearm transfered in is not likely to get any special pricing.

    I have a friend who got his ffl and charges me 20 per transaction even if there is more than one gun. Another charges 25 per gun.

    $20-$25.00 seems fair.

    Its all dependent on where you are, and (more important) how many competing FFLs there are in the area.

    Like every other service, people charge what the market can bear.

    The guy who ran my CCW class would charge $25 for his students.

    The FFL I usually use was charging $25, until last year, when he upped to $35.

    I think $35 is high for what amounts to 60 seconds of paperwork and a phone call, but I'm not trying to feed my kids on the proceeds of a gun store, and I won't begrudge him the extra $10 on the occasional transfer.

    I once paid $50 in South Florida, and that's considered competitive there, I think.

    One suggestion, some gun clubs have an FFL that will do transfers for you as part of the club membership, so you might look into that angle.

    Some charge differently for different guns. The FFL I used to use changed his policy to $50 per transfer if the gun was new, as it was a firearm he could have got for the person himself. On a used gun, he still charged $20, as he may not be able to easily get you one. The FFL I currently use charges $20 across the board.
