need help with civil war rifle

I have recently aquired a rifle from a friend that i assume is from the civil war period but i dont know. It resembles an 1853 springfied 58 cal. but the top side of the barrel has a release that opens to expose the chamber. the only marking is an "MS" stamped in the top of the barrel. Ill try to get some pictures up soon, if anyone has an idea of what this is please let me know.

  Might be a Merrill a small number of Breach Loaders were bought by the Union during the Civil War. Of course their were a number of others. Linder, Miller, Mont Storm etc. Either post quality photos or get hold of a copy of Flaydermans guide, they are all covered in it.
