.44 Special Question???
I was looking through my safe and found a full box of PMC .44 Special, 240 Gr. JHP. My Question is, Will the .44 Magnum shoot the .44 Special? I know that the .357 Magnum shoots the .38 Special so I am assuming that the same is true for the .44 Mag. Am I correct? Thanks, Bob
PS- I don't know there they came from since I don't own any .44 caliber firearms, and don't know anything about the ammo.[?][?] The box is Red with black and red PMC on a white background. What should I ask for this ammo, if I were to sell them?[?]

yes you can shoot 44 special in a 44 mag just like you suspected it is same Idea as 38 special in a 357 Mag. PMC is quality ammo maybe not as high as other brands but it is safe. 0 -

Yes, as mentioned, you can safely fire .44 special ammo from any .44 magnum revolver.
As a caliber, .44 special is underrated, in my opinion, given that ballistically its roughly equivalent to 45ACP or .45 (Long) Colt.
PMC is a Korean company, ie "Poongsang Metal Corporation".
Although at one point, PMC was making some of its ammo in the USA, I think right now its all made in South Korea. I've heard of some QC issues in the past, but I think those were all fixed. Personally, I've fired a bunch of the stuff, and never had an issue.
In terms of cost, for whatever reason .44 special ammo usually costs the same or only slighly less than .44 magnum, which is to say its pretty pricey.
I'd think in today's marketplace $30 a box would be fair for 240 grain jacketed hollow point.

FWIW, I've actually shot a couple boxes of PMC .44 special before, and I think I even still have a box of it in my ammo collection.
In general, I like the concept of .44 special, as a revolver equivalent to a .45ACP and as a lighter "target" version of a .44 magnum.
In practice, though, I rarely touch it, just because of cost. If I'm going to be paying .44 magnum prices, I'd like to get .44 magnum performance.
I think the round in general suffers from one of those "chicken and egg" issues. Though ballistically the round is definitely better than .38 special, it offers more recoil than most shooters want to deal with. The guns themselves are also bigger and heavier than more common .38/357 guns making them harder to conceal. Consequently, the round has never been all that popular, and there aren't that many guns chambered in it.
On the flip side, even though its better than .38 special, its probably NOT really better than .357 magnum for defensive use, and again, the ammo is harder to find and usually more expensive.
I've thought about trading up my .38 snubbie to a .44, but given the increase in bulk and expense, I always decided it isn't worth the trouble. If I'm going to carry an all-steel gun, a .357 ought to be good enough. I'm not sure I would WANT to carry an "airweight"/aluminum alloy gun in .44 special.0 -
+1 on Beantown, I rountinely carry a .44 SPL snubbie, and shoot a fair amount - even before the price skyrocket - quality .44 SPL ammo was abit more than entry level .44Mag. $30 to $35 a box is not unheard of, and supply is short - but to move it you may have to keep price at an attractive point - I know PMC is good stuff, but it has a negative image in many shooters' minds.
I carry a 1st Gen. CA Bull Dog Pug, in stainless steel, 2.5" recessed crown barrel, 21.5oz., about the size of a S&W K frame. Mine has factory neoprene wrap around grips - there is a bit of a push at ignition which some might find objectionable, but with 50+ years experience, I've learned to handle worse. I also have a .45 Colt short barrelled revolver - but that Kicks a bit more, especially with SD rounds - I like the concept of the .44 Spec. Thanks for the comments.0 -
