M1 parkerizing

My father wants to get his International M1 parkerized. Is this a good idea or does it decrease its value? Anything else we should be aware of if he goes through with doing it?

It will decrease the collector value. How much depends upon the quality of the reparerizing and the skill of the operator. V.Good, correct IHCs are currently selling in the $1800 to $2200 range, depending upon overall condition, here in Eastern PA. 0 -

I have some questions for your father:
Is the rifle all original?
Is the rifle all correct?
What is the condition of the rifle (% of finish & bore measurements)?
Is it import marked?
Why does he want to refinish it?
If his answer to any of these questions is "I don't know", then he would be wise to have you post photos of the rifle for us before he does anything to it.

1. the rifle is all original except for the 1953 barrel change out (common for military rifles at that time?) and some of the stock had been repaired with wood very very close in grain and color to original to match up well
2. rifle is all correct
3. I will have to check on import marked but I am pretty confident it is
4. overall finish was good and barrel had no modifying of measurements
5. he felt parkerizing would make it look better (which by the way it has already been sent off for parkerizing...I guess it's too late)0 -

Are you sure that the barrel isn't original? International never made their own barrels. Several brands were used; LMR being the most comon but other makers were used as well. Just whose name is on that barrel? 0 -

The man that posted the barrel change. 53 is a good year for the barrel he does not state the maker.

Once we get the gun back from repark, I will double check the barrel. But are there really any M1s out there that did not have barrels replaced at some point (in the 50's)... 0 -
Yep. I have two that have the original barrels and they are WWII Springfields. And another that is a Korean War era H&R. And I am willing to bet a shiney new dime that Mark Christian has quite a few in his collection/hoard. 0 -

Well, just get it looked over by a good gunsmith. And enjoy it as a shooter. [Item in blue above] has caused it to lose most, if not all collector interest.
If you are still worried about value, you needn't anymore. It's now an $700-$800 gun tops..depending on the readings of the cylinder and barrel gauges (gunsmith will gauge, and report the readings). Best, Joe0
