I didn't want to hijack the other thread, but i'm confused......

No, both the pre W W I and 1923 DWM made Commercials were the ones with the 5 digit serial numbers. The military Lugers made by both DWM and Erfurt almost always had a lower case letter as part of the serial number. This letter was changed after every 9,999 pistols were manufactured.
But the Luger we were talking about had a 4 digit ser# and a nitro proof. I thought the nitro proof was only on comercial guns made after 1920.

The so called "1920 Commercials" were assembled/reworked for commercial sale by unknown parties in Germany during the 1920's. They used any Luger parts they could get their hands on, military or commercial and made new replacement parts so they could sell the guns. Since they were sold commercially they had to pass the German proof requirements. This is why the have the "Crown N" proof mark. 0 -
thanks! hard keeping track of the different variations! I'm still trying to figure out the "double date" 1920 marked guns.
