what is this parts function? is this the one that sits behind the center of the cylinder and locks it in place?

  If it's a S&W, the little 'nub' that sticks out the back of the cylinder serves as the cylinders axle during rotation. It also serves as the cylinder-to-frame lock, as the 'nub' is spring loaded, and will snap into the corresponding hole in the recoil plate. The little piece of metal in the hole is also spring loaded (attached to the thumb release) and will recess under spring pressure from the cylinder pin. S&W's also have a locking feature on the underside of the barrel (about mid-way), and will be pushed forward when the gun is unlocked. Best, Joe

  Below is a schematic of a colt new service. The latch pin (with stud) is item No.22. It's purpose is to retain the latch onto the sideplate. Best, Joe
