What model, style of semi-auto pistol/handgun is recommended for minimal recoil?

    Minimal recoil limits you to a .22; good ones would be all the Ruger semi-autos & the Browning Buckmark, which fire .22 LR (long rifle).

    I am assuming that you do not want it for self defense, as these would be poor choices for that purpose.

    Assuming self-defense...perhaps a "heavy-made" all steel .380 auto!

    I have a Target pistol with large grips in 22 short with ported barrel that was used for olympic Rapid fire matches has almost no recoil BUT is made for that one purpose.

    Recommended FOR WHAT PURPOSE?

    As mentioned, the lowest recoil pistol cartridge in common current use is the .22 short rimfire round, usually used for indoor target shooting. This will give you air-gun like levels of recoil.

    Unfortunately, power-wise, a .22 short is inadequate for shooting living things larger than squirrels, and even then only at close range.

    There are things that can be done to guns to reduce perceived recoil, such as adding extra weight, barrel compensators (or porting), and better grips. Edit: You can also reduce recoil by using low-power ammunition, though with semi-auto guns you may need to have the gun tuned a bit to cycle it reliably.

    I think you'd get a lot better information if you opened up the question a little and stated what you want to do with this gun, and why you believe recoil will be a problem.

    For defensive-type use, a full sized all-steel semi-auto gun in 9mm luger has pretty low recoil, and fires a round that is powerful enough for the purpose. One example of such a gun would be the CZ-75B pistol, though there are many others that could work.

    If you are interested in a recreational gun, I'd suggest an all-steel semi-auto in .22 long rifle. Recoil will be a little higher than the .22 short, though it will still be quite low, and ammunition is both less expensive and (more importantly) far more readily available. One example of such a gun in current production would be the Ruger MKIII pistol, though again, there are many others that could work.
