    Sir,

    The Remington Model 722 was first introduced in 1948. The 257 Roberts chambering was discontinued in 1960. Your gun will fall into this time span.

    With a good magnifying glass & natural light, examine the barrel date code again. If truly unledgable, then the above is as close as anyone can come.

    I have one 382XXX made in 1956. My guess yours is '55 or '56...Nice Gun!

    I know this site will give the barrel code breakdown, but since you can't read it they give you a contact number e-mail here too, to ask questions.

    FWIW, I have a Rem 722 with a 20" barrel and it's a Remington barrel. It didn't come like that from the factory. But, there was no record it was a Remington Custom. Serial 291XXX and Feb 1953. The Z's didn't seem to get stamped correctly and show more like angle marks. So '54 would be an A and '55 would be a B.
