Western Field 30-30, how old?
I recently acquired an old 30-30 lever action, manufactured I think by Marlin and sold under the Western Field name. I found a number inscribed on the left side of the receiver which appeared to be a social. In researching I found that the individual matching that number died in 1992 in Illinois. The serial number? found under the lever is AB30953. Can anyone tell me how to find the date of manufacture? It's in way above average condition and a keeper. Just curious!

1966 if the serial number letter prefix dating code is the same as used on the standard Marlin rifles. 0 -
Thanks alot! I was 13! I really thought the old rascal might have had some history and, like I mentioned earlier, it's a keeper for me for that reason alone. Given the fact that it's in great shape(blueing and stock are 90-95%, bore like a mirror)and a dream to shoot in the brush, it's one that'll get passed down to my sons one day! Thanks again! 0 -
I doubt if it's a Marlin. Probably a Mossberg--they look a lot alike. 0 -
The Western Field model 33 was a Marlin 336, but Wards did contract many times more Mossberg firearms and a handful of Marlins.
The serial number series probably is not the same as the main production run.0 -
It's a Model 740A-EMN. It sure looks like a 336... 0 -

The easiest way to tell the Marlin from the Mossberg levergun is to see if the trigger stays with the receiver, or rides with the lever, when you work the lever. The Marlin's trigger stays with the receiver. The Mossberg's (472-series) rides with the lever (it's pinned to the trigger guard), ala Browning BLR.0 -
