1911 Question

If you wanted a good 1911 would it be better to buy the Springfield and add the options you wanted yourself, or buy a Kimber that is already tricked out, or something else that I have not mentioned? You guys generally give good advice so that is what I am trying to get again. Thanks guys!

    ,,,,,have been given a Colt 1911 (1918 WW1 Replica-01918) that falls within the Colt recall serial numbers,,,,,,have no desire to shoot this weapon,,,,,,,so, would you return it to Colt or leave as is with a printed recall notice in the box for future ref after I'm gone,,,,,,,any input appreciated,,,,,,,

    It will protrude about half an inch, but will latch up and feed normally.

    put one of the finger rest bases on it and it won't look half bad. print's a bit more though.

    I believe you can get a 7rd compact mag that fits flush

    Carry wth the small mag in it, use a 8-10 rounder for reload.

    Thanks everyone!,Gave me the answers I was lookin for.

    Finding the pinky base plate is what I'm looking for now.

    I like how my Chip power mags(10rd.) fit the full sized, haven't been able to find the equivalent(nice fit with long pinky base) for the compact.

    Some 1911s have issue with overextending the magazine due to the loose mag tunnel and height of the mag release it is almost necessary to have the correct base foot to provide correct geometry for feed. There's also the 3 point jam issue relevant to length of feed lips notated in very old gun smith books (relevant to geometry of feed). A magwell accessory preferably one that is a more elaborate mainspring housing (1 solid part) will give little issue with shooting loose. They usually need to be filed to blend with the frame mag well bevel or if you don't mind it leave the inner hang over as it doesn't affect function. Wilson Combat made or still possibly makes a steel base bad to replace the longer mag's base pad. The front foot of this pad may need to be filed for the mag to lock in on the mag release and in this process remove magazine take up. A loose long mag may pinch the lower hand. I personally don't care much for tapered mag wells or bevels, I like this feed surface to be rounded the mag seems to insert smother. Your magazine has feed lips that are inset & curvy, this directly aids in insertion so the need for a large mag well seems a gimmick and in a carry gun contributes to "printing". If you hold the mag from the bottom with your index finger on the front & pointing upward to the frame it may provide better accuracy for insertion. What ever you decide there needs to be a foot on a base pad. 1911 styles are not Glocks or machine pistols so the mags have 1911 geometry relevant to a 2 part feed ramp & barrel link. Although a long response it's very on point.
