The hold down screw is probably loose that holds the parts together.
Tighten it to much and the plastic will crack, so go careful on it..

    Mrbruce,
I tried what you suggested but the screw is tight, I cannot tighten or loosen it. As I slide the safety back it seems to strike something inside the receiver causing the safety button to stop.

Take the bolt out and see if the safety block is inserted correctly.

    How old is this shotgun?

There is a detent ball on a spring under the safety switch, if it is out of spec or has moved out of position it may cause the problem you are having.

The gun is less than 10 years old. I will try what you recommend.

If the detent ball is out of place, you should be able to put it back or just replace it.

Or you might want to do the whole deal.

If you are putting it back or installing a new one it is quite easy to do.

    1) remove the bolt and carrier assembly and the trigger group
    2) remove the safety button (be sure to note the position of the safety block so you can reinstall it correctly)
    3) place the detent ball on the detent spring
    4) replace the safety plate (the piece with the holes), button, and block
    5) reassemble gun and enjoy

Be careful on step 4, a lot of small parts to hold in place at once.[;)] Also do this in a place where you will not easily lose the ball or other parts if dropped.

Outstanding, thanks for the help everyone. I'll be carrying my muzzle loader for the rest of this week but at least I know what to do and can take care of it myself.

I just removed the spring and ball and screwed it down; works fine.
