I'd buy the Armalite, the DPMS sportical is junk in comparison to the armalite..JMHO>

Either the Armalite or a Rock River Arms. It is mostly personal preference but I wouldn't purchase a DPMS.

I think this question depends on what you want to use it for. Plinky on the weekend in comparision to trusting your life with it if SHTF. The same gun, totally different quality stanards.

And yes, the FSB can be changed.

I would first say, what is it for and what sights do you want. Iron sights, optics with flip up backup, or scope.

There are so many models it can be overwhelming. I personally like, optics, low power, with flip up sights. But everyone has their opinion. Buy the rifle as you want. Don't buy what your going to take off. They have optic ready rifles with no sights and flip up sights. Rifles with front sight posts and rail on back.

M&P has a nice modular carbine they call it, but that might not be what your looking for. The DPMS sportical isn't junk, it is stripped though. If its your first AR might not be a bad way to go. I would probably go with something else. The Front sight post(FSP) can be changed, but why buy one with if you don't want it.

I kind of ran on, but hope I made some sense. Web sights help but seeing is even better. I live in Iowa but I go to Scottsdale, AZ a lot and Scottsdale Gun Club has the best selection I've ever seen of AR's, even handled a SCAR over the weekend. Getting tired and running on, good luck.

Thank you all. I'm looking for an all purpose. Home defense, varmint, plinking. Probably in that order. Scope obviously for varmints. Like the idea of the removable carry handle, switch out with scope. Actually like the looks of the weapon with the handle on, Old school M16. Would like to be able to add light for pesky racoons and defense. I'll keep researching.

    Home defense,

Then I think you need to spend some more money on a company that conforms to the quality standards set by the military. Included would be Noveske, Colt, Bravo Company, LMT, Sabre. Yes, they may cost a little more, but you are paying for the quality control.

I would buy a DPMS...Just not the Sportical model...they are cheapened up with no dust cover, and perhaps no forward assist.

Look at the Stag Arms, Rock River Arms, BushMaster, S&W too. Look at them all except Vulcan, Hesse, or Blackthorne.

    Best
