Ruger MK11 rear sight adjustment question
Can someone please tell me how much one click of adjustment on the stock Ruger MK!! rear sight moves the POI in inches. Ruger says one click = 1.5" at 25 yards and Volquartsen says the same thing for their replacement rear sight but neither person I talked to was very convincing. I tried my new ( used ) 5.5" bull barrel MK11 yesterday and my guess, there was a gusty cross wind which complicated the issue, would be closer to 1/4" at 25 yards off a rest. I had a 1/2 hour the day before and shot a 6 shot group of 5/8" off the rest in calm conditions. With that level of accuracy 1.5" seems way too coarse but I'd like to know the actual value of a click so I'd have a better idea of what I'm doing when I make adjustments.

I don't really know the answer, but I agree, 1.5" at 25 yards DOES seem sort of coarse.
Instead of speculating, why not just check it yourself? Its not like .22LR ammo is expensive or particularly demanding to fire.
Fire a 3 shot group, rotate one sight five clicks, measure the distance between the groups, then divide by 5. Done.
If your group moves 7.5 inches, you'll know Ruger was right.0 -
Thanks for the reply. I actually tried your method but the wind clearly colored my results. As close as I can determine at this point it works out to 4 clicks per inch at 25 yds. A much better result than Ruger said it was. I was hoping, however, for a solid number and not an estimate that depended on my shooting skill and weather conditions. I have come to expect published values for rifle sights and scopes, frequently 1/4 " at 100 yards, and thats why this topic post . Obviously 1/4 " at 100 yards is unrealistic for a handgun, given such a short sighting radius, but 1.5" is too course. 0 -

I think every other handgun I've used with adjustable sights moves about 1/4" at 25 yards.
So your estimate is probably correct.0 -
You could always use a micrometer or caliper; find out how far each click moves the sight up or down (left/right may or may not be the same) and then with the distance between front and rear sight and front sight to the target, exact measurements are easy to calculate.
Example,
If the actual distance from front to rear sight is 5.5 inches, that's approximately 1/163 of the distance from the front sight to the target at 25 yards. If 10 clicks raises the sight by 1/10 inch, then 1 click would raise it 1/100. Multiply 1/100 times 163. and you come up with 1.63 inches per click. Or whatever.0 -
On my Mark II one click is 1/4 to 1/3 inch at 25 yards as closely as I can calculate 0 -
Thanks all for the input. I realize that barrel length is a variable which complicates Ruger publishing a figure but I wish they would do so with that note. I think on my 5.5" model that, like 5mmgunguy's, one click is between 1/4" and 1/3" or 1/2" at 25 yards, but I can't shoot well enough to be sure which it is. Of course that means I can't shoot well enough yet so that the difference matters much. I'd just like to know. 0 -
I got a definitive answer on the Ruger Forum. For the 5'5" barrel 1 click windage = .39" and 1 click elevation = .29". It speaks well for the 5 shot, 5 clicks, 5 shot method suggested here but the actual figures are important to me. Sighting in a gun can be a frustrating experience if you let it get you and I sometimes do. At those times real click values help eliminate the doubt that a flier can introduce. 0 -
