Ithaca 10 Gauge Double

I have an interesting Ithaca 10 Ga double, Lewis model with 30 inch fluid steel barrels. Barrels have not been cut as they are choked full and full. Overall NRA good. The oddity is that one barrel has a removable fully rifled insert that extends the full length of the barrel and is threaded on the muzzle end. The breech end has an extractor that is actuated by the shotgun extractor. The insert is chambered for the 45/70 rifle cartridge, and due to matching patina appears to be about the same age as the shotgun. This is a new one on me, anybody out there seen one of these?

  Such inserts used to be regularly available.
  The 1908 Sears & Roebuck catalog reprint in the 1964 Gun Digest shows a full length .38-55 insert for 12 gauge shotguns.
  Price $4.95 when an Ithaca hammerless shotgun was $24.00-$29.50.
  But they had a "Universal Shotgun and Rifle"; one of those tubes included with an imported hammer gun for $16.62.
  
  Neither that Sears catalog or an 1889 Great Western Gun Company catalog in another old G.D. shows a .45-70 insert for 10 gauge, but it seems to be in proportion to their .38-55 in 12 gauge outfits.
