Help with Misfiring Problem

I have a Savage/Stevens model 94F single barrel 20 gauge that I bought for my daughter to shoot at the turkey shoot. This gun will not fire on the first attempt about 3 out of five times. It will usually always fire on the second attempt. I have inspected the shell after the first misfire and the primer is dented. The hammer feels strong when you cock it. My question is what is usually the cause of this. Is it the firing pin being worn or a weak hammer spring.

    You may have crud in the firing pin hole in the breach face. If you haven't already tried it, use a spray solvent directed into the front of the firing pin hole. Use care that the solvent doesn't damage the stock. I use a synthetic safe gun cleaning product which is not as harsh as Brakleen but works fairly well. There might also be foreign material or solidified grease within the action causing drag on the hammer so the flush might help that. Last alternative is excess headspace. How much has the gun been used? If the flushout doesn't help, professional help might be indicated.

    With the gun unloaded, barrel open and hammer down, hold the trigger back while pressing the hammer forward. You will be checking the firing pin for any possible damage such as chipping or mushrooming. With the aid of an assistant you can do a down and dirty quick check for pin protrusion using a feeler gauge. You will need a feeler gauge blade, or combination of two that equal .050". Your pin protrusion should equal the thickness of the gauge give or take .005".
    If it passes those first checks then you likely have crud buildup between the firing pin body and the inside of the receiver face or the hammer fall is being slowed by crud or tooling marks. If you don't have the tools or experience to disassemble the gun a gunsmith, and a small investment, may be your best option.

    Thanks guys. Taking the gun down will not be a problem. I just got this gun last week and have not had time to take it down yet. I figured you guys here could give me some good advice about what to look for. Thanks

    I had a misfire problem with one of my older BT99s, we tore it down to replace the firing pin, locking block and hammer spring. The firing pin was the wrong one, so we replaced the hammer spring and locking block, and it shoots fine now, doesn't miss a lick.

    Are you certain it's not an ammo problem? I had a similar problem with my .22 and it turned out to be bad ammo.

    Those old 94's have a firing pin return spring inside the breechblock..They get wet and rust away...Then there is nothing to hold the pin to the rear..If the pin isn't held all the way to the rear...The hammer won't make good contact...Check that spring...Replacement can be cut from a retractable ballpoint pen spring...Best of luck...
