    The 75 grain A-max has dropped tons of deer, and hogs also...
    They work on big deer too, just put it in the correct spot and it will get the job done no problem... mainly in a 6mm Remington case, Ackled or otherwise.. The .223 is a bit on the light side for the job, but it will work if your careful.....

    They will work if the shot is placed properly. Untill this year I had killed deer with everything from 22WMR to 45-70. This year we add 17 Fireball to the list. Shot placement is crucial, and from the 223 Remington this can not be stressed enough. There are a couple loads in the 223 of which I favored for deer. Those are the 45 Grain Barnes XLC, and the 60 grain Nosler Partition. If I am not mistaken, Trophy Bonded has a 22 cal bear claw too. At any rate, right shot placement needs to be the frame of mind...even with a 500 Whiz Bang.

    I shot a doe right between the eyes, she was looking at me 100 yards away, with a 105 A-Max out of a 6BR 8 twist Mrbruce built for me. Bullet performance was spectacular, death was instantaneous for the deer.

    I've also head shot 10 or 12 deer with 55FMJ and 75OTMs.. death has never taken more then a few minute..

    travis3,

    I use the 75 gr. AMAX in a load for my .22-243 Ackley Improved for Mule deer and Coues deer. But my absolute favorite is the 105 gr. AMAX loaded in the .240 Weatherby for long range Coues deer hunting. My last shot was 580 yards across a canyon and one dead deer. Fortunately it was cool/cold because it took me nearly two hours to get to him...

    Best.

    This past year my cousin and myself have taken small bucks with the Barnes tsx 53gr bullets. His was a shoulder shot mine a neck shot both bullets exited. Last year I took a small doe using the Speer 70gr bullet also one shot, however I was given a box of the Hornady 75gr A-Max bullets and was wondering how they would do. They shoot quit well from my Stevens 200 223 Remington.

    Hornady replied to a e-mail and they said the 22cal a-max was designed for target shooting and never tested for exspansion? I always thought they listed their a-max bullets for middle size game?

    travis3,

    "I always thought they listed their a-max bullets for middle size game?"

    They may have stated that in the past, I don't remember, but they have changed their advertising to reflect a more conservative representation of the bullet's performance due to reports from hunters that might have lower quality shooting skills. Reports of poor performance will hurt a product even if the reports are slanted and incorrect. This is more true today because of the internet than ever before.

    A-MAXr

    Features:

    * Ultra-low drag tip
    * Aerodynamic secant ogive delivers flat trajectories
    * Excellent uniformity and concentricity
    * Jacket precision drawn for unequaled consistency
    *
    Delivers consistent accuracy at all ranges

    *Match bullets are not recommended for hunting medium & large game.

    Those of us who use the AMAX bullets for hunting can demonstrate and expound on the success and lack of failures but that never completely dissuades the small minority of hunters who have had a failure but due to their mistake rather than the performance of the bullet. They will blame the bullet forever without ever admitting a mistake. No amount of evidence or persuasion will change their minds since they couldn't possibly make a mistake.

    Hornady is practicing CYA for the protection of the company and its profits.

    nononsense, you are right about bullet placement. My cousin and I limit our shots to standing or slow walking deer only. NO RUNNING shots of any kind. We also keep from shooting past 100 yards. That part is easy as the longest shot possible for us, would be 125 yards. I see by others that have replied that they have hade no problems with the A-max bullet. If there was a problem it was the hunters fault as you have said.
