Rem. 870 barrel interchangability

Can someone tell me the difference in 870 barrels, which ones will interchange and which ones will not.

  As far as I know they should interchange just fine if they are in the same gauge.
  
  Some 20ga. recievers are smaller, and take a "small ring" barrel.
  Guess I learned something new today.

  Certain Special Field 12 gauge have a shorter forend and the barrel ring is closer to the chamber.
