custom barrels

I've finally got my pre-64 magnum action[300h&h] now to start on my new rifle. I have a barrel maker in mind that I have worked with in the past who will barrel the action after truing and lapping but was looking for alternates as I do get tunnel vision on these things

  I found a nice old model 70 with a really nice custom stock, I would like to rebarrel it to a different caliber. Can a barrel maker exactly duplicate an original barrel contour or is it not feasible?

  Yep, Harry McGowen, (815)937-9816, offers it. If my memory serves he charges an extra $100 or so for it on top of everything else. So as always how much are you willing to pay to get what you want? Good luck with the project....

  Are you asking about duplicating the Factory original contour?
  
  If yes, then several barrel makers offer factory contours, for various models of rifles. The stipulation is that they will not be perfectly precise but will be slightly oversize (maybe 0.015") so as to allow for polishing and fitting. Factory barrels vary in size and shape as well, even if by a tiny bit.
  
  If you're looking for an EXACT match as in drop-in, you need to have the barrel supplied to a gunsmith who will then finish the machining and polishing to make the fit perfect. Expect to pay for this service as it can be time consuming to get the precise fit required.
