    From my experiences there is no hard and fast rule. The length of the forearm will generally dictate the length of the octagon though.

    If you haven't contacted a shop yet, Al Story has done some outstanding barrels for me.

    Factory original Winchester 1/2 octagon barrels were made to be slightly longer than the forend stock (1/4" - 3/8"). Winchester always moved the barrel address stamp to accomodate the length of the octagon section of the barrel.

    It's mostly based on what lis visually appealing. I did the same thing a couple of years ago with a 30" barrel and settled on about the first third octogon with the remainder being round.
