"can the enfield be accurate?".......yes & no. it depends on your deffinition of 'accurate' . will this make up to a 1/4" rifle (group size)......probably not, a l" rifle probably. please note your rifle is NOT a .308 now, it is a 7.62x51 nato. (less pressure, minor dimenstion differences).

I think you would put a strain on your friendship.

Not only must he alter the stock & handguard, but he's got to fit that front sight/band on the shorter barrel. All so that you can have an ugly rifle with a moderately heavy short barrel instead of an ugly rifle with a moderately heavy medium barrel. Plus, the worst sights of any military rifle in the last 100+ years.

If it were me (well, actually, it WAS me), I'd just degrease & refinish the wood, & shoot .308 in it. I know, I'm living on the edge, but the steel & action seem overbuilt to me.

That action would not be my choice for a .308. Since your project will entail a lot of work and a not inconsiderable expense, I would suggest you start with a more suitable action. 98 Mauser, etc. or maybe you could find a Remington 700 rifle that has fallen on hard times and needs tender loving care. Your Ishapore is best left as is. (I do have an Ishapore and do shoot it for fun.)
