Gas Assembly, manual Recocking M1A
Before I do it, I'm gonna ask the experts..
The screw where the Gas Cylinder is on the M1A.
If I turn that 90 degrees, to shut off the gas operation can I.
1. Fire the weapon at all.
2. Will it enable me to do manual re-cocking..
the only reason I ask, is because my buddy has an SKS and he has the ability to change that setting as well, but it is a switch on his gun

It's called the spindle valve. And, your understanding of it's use is exactly right. It's turned to the 3:00 position to direct all the gas out of the front of the barrel to fire grenades.

To be more precise, it will force you to do manual re-cocking. And by that, I mean working the operating rod handle manually to eject, and to charge a fresh round. It will not damage a rifle with the M14 (M1A) gas system.
Just as a point of reference, in M1/M14 (M1A) nomenclature, manual re-cocking means working the triggerguard like a lever action to cock the hammer. I don't think that's what you meant. Best, Joe0 -
On this same note, the FN-FAL has an adjustable gas system - you can either bleed off more/less gas to get proper functioning for the ammo you are using, bleed off way less to get the action to short stroke so you can manually operate for each shot, or flip the gas plug around 180 deg. to turn off gas completely (grenade launcher setting). When I shoot the little bit of LC Match ammo I have (5 boxes left...) I set the gas so it barely cycles, it drops the empties right at my feet. 0 -
We'll it was meant for keeping the breech locked up so gas wouldn't escape and you could launch a grenade on the power of a blank. It wasn't engineered for shooting a bullet down the barrel. I'm sure it was engineered with a certain amount idiot proofing, but doesn't sound like something I'd wanna do to my match rifle, at least more than once or twice. I'm not an expert though, just saying I wouldn't do it to mine.

Understood. The only difference (except, perhaps a slight change in harmonics) is what is happening after the bullet travels past the gas-port. The barrel pressure downrange of the gas-port when firing live ammunition (with the spindle valve closed) is well within barrel tolerances. The pressure downrange of the gas port is greater when firing a grenade*, and the M14 system is 'good to go' with the higher pressures generated by grenade launching.
Another thing..(someone please cite the source-I can't recall) is that in an M1 the self-loading reciprocation doesn't start to move until the bullet is approx. three feet from the muzzle, and in the M14, not until about one foot from the muzzle. So, you see, the bolt remains completely locked during internal travel of the bullet.
*The primary function of the locking spindle is to protect the reciprocating parts during grenade fire, not necessarily to boost the projectile. Best again, Joe0
