I'd like to get an approximate value on this 357 S&W Model M686-something can't make it out
6inch barrel shoots fine,

I would ballpark it between $450 and $525.

Depending on where you live as to what it is worth. If you are in California where you can't buy your gun (except from private party) due to CA DOJ Safety Test, they sell for $600.00. As you know your gun is the old style (pre-safety lock). There are a lot of us who much prefer the older style.

New retail will run you around $700.00 to $750.00
WOW they sure have come up in price! I bought one new a few years ago for under $500.00

I'd ballpark it at $450-550.

686 is a nice "all purpose" gun.
Good for defense, hunting, target shooting, etc.
